The Greenspring campus library will be open 8-5 (excluding weekends and holidays) until the beginning of spring semester on January 18th. The college and library are closed from December 24th to January 2nd, and also January 17th.

The School of Business Library will be closed from Dec. 22nd until January 2nd when winter break hours of 8:30-5:00 will resume.

Food For Fines

Starting on May 3rd and continuing until May 15th (Finals Week), students will be able to pay their library fines with non-perishable food items at the Greenspring Campus Library.

Each canned good or food package donated will reduce overdue fines by $1-2.

Only overdue fines will be waived, and not replacement costs of lost items.

The kinds of food items the Library will accept include peanut butter, canned meat or fish, canned beans, stews and soups, canned fruits and vegetables, powdered milk, canned juice, boxed pasta and whole grain cereals. Unacceptable items include can/boxes with expired dates, damaged cans or boxes, ramen noodles, Koolaid or water, perishable food or food in glass jars and candy.

You don’t have to have fines to donate food.

Food will be donated to the Maryland Food Bank.

Need a quiet place to study for finals? The Greenspring campus library will be open Sunday, Dec. 6th from 12-6. We will have normal operating hours finals week (Dec. 7-11; closed Dec. 12) and then begin an 8-5 weekday schedule until classes begin January 19th.

We will be closed when the college shuts down for the holiday from Dec. 23-Jan. 3.

Last year, students from several classes did projects on the Greenspring library facility and what would make it more appealing to students. One aspect of the renovation everyone agreed on: the library needs to be more colorful. As a result, we are beginning the process of painting the library in bright, lively colors. New Fall Hours

Since its opening in fall 2008 the School of Business Library on the Owings Mills campus has been able to offer extended library hours, including 24/5 around-the-clock service starting Sundays at 12:00 noon.

Given these extended hours at the SB Library and and the lack of shuttle service to Greenspring on Sundays, SU's Greenspring Library will not open most Sundays this semester. We will open Sundays during our busiest times around midterm and final exams.
Here are our new hours:

Mon. - Thurs. 8am-10pm
Fri. 8am-7pm
Sat. 9am-5pm

Spring Hours

As we look ahead and plan our library hours for the spring semester, we are trying to balance the times we are open between two libraries--Greenspring and School of Business.

Greenspring will be open the following times:

Mon-Thurs 8am-10pm
Friday 8am-7pm
Saturday 9am-5pm
Sunday 12pm-6pm

However, we will be closed the following days: Jan 18-20, March 8, 14-15, April 9-12.
During the week of Spring Break (March 9-13) our hours will be 8-6.

Extended and Holiday Hours

The Greenspring Library will be open extended hours from Dec. 1 to Dec. 4. The Library will be open until 11pm from Monday through Thursday so students can work in the library and study for final exams . The Library will resume regular hours and be open until 7pm on Friday, Dec. 5.

The Greenspring Library will begin holiday hours starting Sunday, December 14. We will be closed weekends and open weekdays until 5pm from Dec. 15 to Dec 23.

Thanksgiving Hours

24/5 Service Hours

Hours of Operation –
· This service will begin on October 7th.
· The 24/5 extended service hours will run from Sundays at 10pm to Fridays at 9am
· Security for this service will be provided between 11pm and 7am each evening.
· The 24 hour access will be provided during the fall and spring semesters except on university-wide holidays.

Holidays and Intersessions –
· On university holidays, during the intersession between the fall and spring semesters, and during the summer sessions, the library will not provide 24 hour access
· Following is a schedule for library hours for the holidays during the fall 2008 semester:

October 9th Yom Kippur holiday – Library will close at 10pm on Wednesday, October 8th and reopen on Friday, October 10th at 9am.

November 26th to 30th Thanksgiving holiday – Library will close at 10pm on Tuesday, November 25th and reopen at 12pm on Sunday, November 30th.
December 14th Last day of fall 2008 semester – The last day of 24 access for the fall 2008 semester will be December 13th. The library will close at 10pm on December 14th and will not continue 24 hour access until the beginning of the spring 2009 semester.

Compete against other creative types to assemble the most original bookcart. We provide art materials and carts; you provide the bookcart vision and bring it to life.

Take: One standard bookcart
Your Assignment: Using supplied crafts and anything you bring, design your bookcart on-site. Open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni. Spaces limited.
Strut Your Design Genius: Sign-up in teams of at least two people. You have three hours to assemble at the library.

Plasma Display

A new plasma display has been added to the Maryland Room in the back of the library for academic use by faculty and students. Scheduling can be done online here or by stopping by or calling the Library Circulation Desk at X 2275. Availability can be checked on this calendar.
A Villa Julie College ID is necessary to use the Plasma TV and remote. Pick up the remote at Circulation Desk shortly before scheduled use.

Julie Billiart had to face much adversity in her life: the turmoil in France prior to the French Revolution as well as severe physical challenges with which she lived much of her life. Yet she persevered and founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a religious order of women which has encircled the globe, bringing the Catholic faith as well as social justice and education to the poor. This story of her life and works serves as inspiration in our own turbulent times.

What is Central Search?

Central Search is a new tool acquired by the library that lets you search numerous databases at the same time using a single interface. If you're not sure which database to use, or want to see which database is likely to have the most relevant content, Central Search will show you results from all selected databases. It will also link you to a full text article, if it is available. There are several ways to refine your search, and results can be clustered by topic or database. Central Search will also search the SHARC library catalog at the same time it searches the databases. Ask one of the librarians for a demonstration to learn more about Central Search!

Bring Your Own Headphones

New Databases: OED, Historical Statistics, AP Images

We're adding three new databases this Fall. All can be accessed from the DATABASES link on the library's homepage:

The Oxford English Dictionary. Second Edition, Third Edition...it's all here in addition to latest new entries. You can browse, select how to display entries, and find a term when you know the meaning but have forgotten the term. A page with sample assignments to help you learn the ins and outs of using OED Online can be found here: http://dictionary.oed.com/learning/university/worksheet.html

Historical Statistics was last updated 30 years ago by the Census Bureau and has now finally been updated again (and expanded) by several academic organizations and a slew of scholars. It's also in electronic format so the data can be tabulated and charted for different research purposes. New research and new data contained in this new "Millenial Edition" make this an exciting addition to our database offerings.

AP Images is a treasure trove of over a million photos from the Associated Press, some dating back to the 1820's. The photos can be searched by keyword, location and date. The Help pages are clear and offer a good introduction to what is available as well as how to use the images once you find them.
